Hat of Chaos Manifold
Welcome to today’s edition Aizendore’s Periodical of Possibilities! This is where you can get a sneak peek inside Aizendore’s Vault in the run-up to our exciting upcoming Kickstarter. Aizendore’s Vault of Tragic Treasures contains lore and mechanics for nearly 300 magic items (yes, that’s with two zeros!) and in each installment we will feature a different treasure from the vault and discuss some ways that you can use it in your campaign to delight (and possibly dismay) your players! Hat of Chaos Manifold
[Insert Chaos Manifold art]
A riot of cloth, leather, scales and other materials, the mish-mash construction of this hat bespeaks its chaotic nature. The Hat of Chaos Manifold will, as a last ditch effort to protect its wearer’s life, polymorph them into a new form. Though, as the fine print always says: results may vary… The wearer could be transformed into anything from a rat to a tarrasque, completely at random! As such, it’s easy to imagine this magic item’s endless possibilities.
Such an eye-catching hat—though it won’t be winning any awards for style—is bound to draw your player’s attention. At least one of their characters is going to want to try it on. But what if it isn’t so easy to get it off? It could be that the hat cannot be removed until it has “done its duty” and triggered the polymorph ability. With any luck, they’ll become a dragon in their time of crisis and not a lizard.
Imagine the scene: The party have finally tracked down the mad mage who has been plaguing them and cornered them in their own sanctum. The paladin goes to strike what they think will be the killing blow when suddenly the mage’s flesh begins to contort and erupt, metamorphosing into a hulking, demonic balor, brandishing a lightning blade and flaming lash! Now that’s a moment the players will be telling tales about for the rest of their gaming lives.
